Our Treatments

The center was designed to deliver treatment to pain patients in a caring and compassionate manner,
with an understanding of how chronic pain can affect numerous facets of an individual’s life.

Advanced Soft Tissue Release (ASTR) Therapy

Advanced Spine and Pain Interventions now offers Advanced Soft Tissue Release

(ASTR) therapy as one of our advanced pain relieving therapies. This cutting edge, noninvasive, non-painful manual therapy is directed at improving ease of movement and decreasing pain caused by the loss of elasticity (stretch) and scar tissue formation in various myofascial tissues of the body.

What is myofascial?

Myofascial is a tough, but normally stretchable connective tissue which surrounds muscles, tendons and ligaments.
In addition, other generalized fascia is a connective tissue found below the skin and throughout the entire body.

What causes myofascial injury?

Previous injuries from sports, auto accidents, falls and even years of poor posture and occupational stress can be causative agents for myofascial injury and pain. Myofascial pain can be a component of many chronic pain syndromes such as low back, shoulder, neck and headache pain for example.
Myofascial pain can be a by-product of the body’s normal healing process thru the formation of scar tissue.

Scar tissue restricts the normal motion and stretch of myofascial tissue during movement. The result of this non-stretch is additional myofascial tearing and scar tissue formation. This viscous cycle of micro injury and scar tissue formation continues until improved elasticity is restored to the involved tissue.

How is myofascial injury treated?

At Advanced Spine & Pain Interventions, we utilize the Advanced Soft Tissue Release (ASTR)
technique developed by Dr. Joseph Jacobs, DPT. This gentle therapy differs from other myofascial treatments in that it is non-painful and most importantly – does not create new scar tissue – which is a causative factor in the viscous cycle of myofascial pain.

Specialized instruments are used to gently mobilize constricted fascial tissue back to a more normal state of stretch. Afterward, other specialized instruments are used to gently manipulate and provide more elasticity to both visible and unseen scar tissue located under the skin and around muscles and tendons.

Time Involved?

An average ASTR treatment usually last 30 minutes and is directed at a specific body area such as the neck, shoulders or low back as indicated. A normal course of therapy is three to six treatments depending on the severity and longevity of the condition.

Common conditions treated with ASTR therapy include:
Neck Pain, Low Back Pain, Headache, Shoulder Pain, Tennis Elbow, Knee Pain, Foot Pain, Plantar Fasciitis
